Tips to Maximise Dairy Data

Key Points

The key to a successful transition to milking cows with robots – operating an Automatic Milk System – is effective data management.

And farmers must learn to trust technology – move away from traditional management – including direct observation and relying on years of experience.

This was the message from consultant Peter Best from Innovative Farm Services to the crowd of dairy farmers and service providers at the Raise the Roof in the NSW Hunter Valley.

Peter works with dairy farmers to ensure they get the most out of their data when moving to Automatic Milk Systems (AMS) to improve decision-making and optimise operations.

He told the Raising the Roof conference that AMS collects a “wealth of data” on each cow’s health, milk yield and milking frequencies, providing farmers with real-time insights that were previously unattainable with traditional milking methods.

Peter said AMS relies “heavily” on the initial input of quality data for automated decision making. That’s why accurate and comprehensive data input, at the foundational step, is crucial.

To fully leverage AMS data, Peter said farmers should implement a structured approach to data management including setting clear objectives for what they wish to achieve.

These goals could include increasing milk yield, improving herd health or optimising labour.

He also suggested farmers integrate AMS data with other farm management software to create a comprehensive overview of farm operations, enabling more informed strategic decisions.

For example, combining milking data with feeding and breeding information to fine-tune feeding strategies to improve milk quality and cow health.
