Milk Production Increases for Northern States

Key Points

The year-on-year increase in milk production in New South Wales and Queensland is leading the nation, while Victoria – the biggest milk producing state – is lagging.

Dairy Australia’s milk production report revealed Queensland had a 7.5 per cent year-to-date increase in milk at the end of September, while NSW production had jumped 8.4 per cent.

This report, released in October, provides a snapshot of production across all the Australian dairy states and how it compares to the previous year.

Australia’s total production was up 1.5 per cent at the end of September at slightly more than 2 billion litres.

The strong results in NSW and Queensland continue the run of big year-on-year increases, in these states, since the start of this dairy production season – July 1.

Queensland produced 11.4 per cent more milk in July this year than the same month in the 2022-23 season. A rise of 7.7 per cent was recorded for August.

NSW dairy farmers began the season producing 8.6 per cent more milk in July and 9.1 per cent more in August.

South Australia’s milk production grew 2.4 per cent year-to-date.

In contrast, Victorian milk production was down 0.6 per cent until the end of September.

The state, which produced about 63 per cent of the nation’s milk in 2022-23 has had a slow start to the season, with every month’s milk production less than the same time last year.
